Mindi…She saved her whole family!

Mindi, now adopted and living with her forever family up in Victoria Canada

It was this time last year.  We received three different calls.  One from the Sheriff’s Dept, one from the local school, and one from a social worker.  Each call  pertaining to the same needy black & tan dog that had been seen going up and down the street, no doubt searching  for food.

Larry, Kim & Christina, our rescue team loaded up the truck and went to the location to see what was going on.  What they found was a heart rendering scene – a whole family of dogs left behind by the owners to fend for themselves.  No food no water and little puppies born and living under the house. It was Larry that crawled under the house and brought out four precious little pups.

We named the Mama, Mindi, Marli her sister, Memphis an adolesent dog and four little pups.   We are happy to say that they all have done well and been adopted.  Mindi, the Mama who saved them all just was adopted two weeks ago by a wonderful family up in Victoria, Canada.   Each one got the most wonderful loving forever homes.

As you watch their story on the below video,  please know how important your continued support means to not just the rescue, but the little lives that are saved.  Thank you for helping the homeless!

Spay & Neuter

Sunday, May 30th, 2010

These three abandoned precious pups we rescued just two weeks ago. They were living in a storm drain

If there were only one message that we could give or send along with you today, it would be to stress the importance of Spaying & Neutering your pets.  It is the answer to all the suffering of the homeless and unwanted that we see on a daily basis.

From puppies abandoned along the roadside,  to precious lives facing euthanasia in shelters each day.  Lets all do our part to ebb the tide of overpopulation, and so much sadness. Be a loving & responsible pet owner.   Spay & neuter your pets.

We know most of you have, and we thank you!  If you need help with this, let us know.  If you know of a neighbor or someone that needs help with this and you can help them, please reach out to help them. Save lives, spay & neuter.

Please take the time to view this short movie by Robert Valentine called:

In Hope: An Animal Shelter Story

Robert, a pre-veterinary student and vet technician at an animal shelter, started a photo-journal of unusual cases to share with other students.  When he was able to work on an animal rights project for his social ethics class, he decided to turn his journal into a short movie, hoping to show what can happen to animals when people stop caring.  The result is a powerful and heartbreaking commentary on shelter animals, pet overpopulation, and animal cruelty – and how these issues affect not only animals but people as well. We are their voice, lets all do our part to help.   Thank you each one!

Traffic Control

Sunday, May 30th, 2010

Jackie, Mickey, Darby, Wally, Snuffy, Charlie & Digger

Looks like we may need some type of traffic control here at Rescue K911.  Playtime/exercise time is always a fun time for the dogs.  Here they get to run and play, splash in the pools and greet friends. Always so excited, sometimes they don’t know which direction to go first.  (Kind of like Larry and me at Walmart!)

K911 Rescuemobile

Coming to a rescue near you!!!

You might see us anywhere these days.  Maybe… around town as we are collecting items needed for the dogs.  Maybe… at the vets office taking little ones in for medical care.  Maybe… on our way to Atlanta taking precious cargo to begin their airflight journey to their new homes up in Canada. Maybe… along the roadside helping a little one in need.  Where ever we may be, please wave or honk to say ‘Hi’…for sure you can’t miss us these days!

♥Special thanks to Linda for doing such a great job designing our Rescuemobile graphics and Sign World in Auburn for doing such a great job on the van. They told us they would do a great job and help the rescue, and they did!  Thank you Linda & Jackie!!

Volunteer Spotlight – Janice

Janice & Ginger

We will never forget how we came to meet Janice!

It was a cold January day when we received her compelling compassionate request.  While coming  home one day she passed a hurt stray dog along the roadside.  Filled with compassion, Janice pulled over and tried to help the injured frightened dog.  Scared, he would not come to her, instead fled back into the woods. Janice was so determined to help him that she followed him all the way back into the woods to where this homeless dog found refuge…a broken down shack.  It would get below freezing that night so Janice  went home and brought back food & blankets for the injured scared dog. That was when she remembered writing down a phone number to a place called Rescue K911 several months earlier.   She has seen a truck parked at Walmart with a Rescue K911 logo magnet (belonging to none other than one of our other wonderful volunteers – Jenny) Upon receiving her urgent call, Larry was able to go and meet Janice and together they were able to get ‘Trooper’ inside a crate and immediately to the vet, Dadeville Animal Hospital for care.  Trooper was in bad shape, he had been shot several times.  His back leg so severely  it could not be saved.  But what a wonderful loving dog, Trooper turned out to be.  Not only did he survive but was adopted by the vet, Dr. Jennifer that cared for him.  A wonderful story all brought about by a wonderful person, Janice.
Since then Janice has rescued several more strays including Ginger, whom you see her holding that has become one of her own personal dogs.
We are so proud to have Janice as a friend and as part of our team.  She comes out to the rescue now volunteering her time and with a mission to pet and help those dogs that just may be a little bit timid or afraid. She has a heart for the homeless and has become a important valuable part of Rescue K911!
“Thank you Janice, and thank you for helping the homeless!”

Good Samaritan

Sunday, May 23rd, 2010

We here at Rescue K911 will probably never be able to express our appreciation or say thank you enough for all your love, prayers and support that you send our way.  There are times our hearts are so encouraged as we read your kind remarks, thanking us for the work we do here for the homeless dogs. You just don’t know what it means to us.  I will share with you one note that we received just this morning that touched our hearts so.

Hi You Angels -

A wonderful man helped my daughter and me when we had a flat tire outside Alexander City.  He refused my offer of money and suggested I give the amount to an animal shelter.  He is also an angel! So, you are getting an extra bit from us. Love you all and I know God appreciates your efforts! God bless you all!

Emaleen

Thank you Emaleen, and thank you Mr. Good Samaritan for helping Rescue K911

Barney

Today we lost one of our best friends to kidney failure & congestive heart failure.  A long time beloved resident of Rescue K911, Barney had endeared himself to countless visitors & all that met him.  He  probably was the one  dog people remembered most and the one dog people returning wanted to meet again. A gentle giant beloved by all.

Barney will long be remembered and for sure has left a large void in all our hearts here at Rescue K911.

Thank you also Patti for all the bathing and making the new rescues feel better.  I got some great pics and slept in the K911 office with Aussie and Alphine to help them along their first night! We all slept good! Thank you for all you do. for sure not an easy job, but you do it so well and so graciously.

Thank you for coming Paula, and bring Shadow and Rambler, it is always so good to see them.  They both look so good & happy.  Thanks for your hands on work with Bronco.  He’s got a long way to go, but he will get there! Thank you!

Shadow’s Story

Saturday, May 8th, 2010

It was late in the afternoon. I had just gotten off work and went to our vet’s office, Opelika Animal Hospital, to pick up Shadow. Shadow, our oldest dog, age 14, had not been feeling well, & had been having more and more blood in her urine. We were concerned and had done everything the doctor had asked us to do, including antibiotics, special diet, etc. But the problem persisted. Word from the front desk was that Dr. Elrod wanted to speak with me. I sunk down in the chair knowing at that moment something serious was wrong. As Dr. Elrod came into the examining room, I knew my heart was not ready for the diagnosis. The ultrasound had revealed a large cancerous tumor in Shadow’s bladder, taking up almost 70%. I don’t know how, but somehow I heard the words…inoperable… maybe two months to live…meds to keep comfortable…I closed my eyes to hold back the tears I knew would soon be spilling over. In that moment in my mind, I left that medical room and traveled back in time to fourteen years earlier when Shadow and I first met.

It was November 1994. We lived in Florida then. One day on the front page of the local newspaper, the St Petersburg Times, pictured a beautiful young white dog up on the examining table…doctor standing near. The article talked about pet over population and how because of lack of space and lack of homes, they were preparing to euthanize this particular dog. The article shocked me, and made me cry. Haunted by the images, I tossed and turned all night thinking about it, and rushed to the shelter the next day to adopt, and to save a life. We had two dogs’ already…two cocker spaniels, but surely we had room for another. It was a life changing moment as my daughter, Rachel and I, walked up and down the concrete isles. I was not prepared for what I saw, and had no idea. So many barking…so many pleading…so many needing a home. Up until that time, I didn’t know anything about pet overpopulation, had never been to a shelter, nor did I understand the importance of spaying & neutering. And euthanasia- did they really put dogs and kitties to sleep??? But in this life changing moment, as I looked into each furry face, I learned the truth real quick. It was life changing for me, and little did I know then how much it would affect me and Larry and our future. But at this particular moment, I couldn’t do anything but stand there & cry. Now I knew…oh my, now I knew. Looking at each face, which one do I choose??? Because we already had two adult established dogs, the staff directed us to a small dog, puppy area. There were so many in there…they were all barking, jumping up on the fence. I thought my heart would break wishing I could take them all home with me. It was when I noticed her… standing there off to the side. A little brown shaggy dog. She was not barking, or pleading, or jumping up on the fence She had such a look on her face, that I would never forget, a look as if saying that she wasn’t sure exactly how she ended up in this place, but whatever the future would bring she would face it proudly and with all the dignity that she possessed. She would not beg, she would not plead. She was standing there off to the side, apart from the others…even turned away slightly, so proud, so strong and she was the one that I adopted that day….Shadow.

Now here 14, almost 15 years later, and I am looking to stay goodbye to one of my best friends as cancer takes her away. We had spent a history together, bringing her along with us, along with Patch, Rags and Candy, when we moved to Alabama in 1997. Then the start of Rescue K911 the same year, and the following years as hundreds of little homeless rescued dogs would come in and out our front doors. For sure Shadow let each one know that she was Queen, and that she was alpha, and indeed she was. Our only regret was that she had to share our time and attention with so many. But she took it all in stride and was happy and loved the Alabama rural countryside. The doors open, bringing me quickly back to the present. The vet tech comes in and at the end of the leash is Shadow. Eyes dimmed due to age, a graying muzzle, ears that don’t hear anymore, but I couldn’t help but notice….oh my there it was again, that same proud, so very strong look in her face. Not really understanding why she was there, but with whatever the future may bring, she would face it proudly and with all the dignity that she possessed. She would not beg, and she would not plead. I couldn’t help but wrap my arms around her and as I held her close, wishing I had such strength as she possessed.

We would have Shadow for 7 out of the 8 promised short weeks together. On her last day she went outside to do her business came in and laid down, unable to get back up again, and started losing large amounts of blood. In our last moments together, as I held her and sang to her, told her how much I loved her, and thanked her for what she had taught me about the plight of the homeless and the little lives that end up in shelters that have no voice to speak for themselves. She was a proud little dog and she had taught us all so very much. All of us here at Rescue K911 owe so much to this little girl, and I promised her that we would continue to carry on the work, and do our very best to make a difference in the world no matter how small it may be, and to keep as many little homeless/unwanted dogs off that euthanasia table as we possibly could.

Ms. Beasley

Saturday, May 8th, 2010

Ms. Beasley was found in a very rural part of Beauregard…wouldn’t you know she had wandered into a very nice family’s fenced in acerage, who knew about K911. How she got their noone knows, as Ms. Beasley is 100% blind. It took Larry and I several hours to drive over and locate the property, it was so rural, but once there our hearts melted when we saw her…

Please meet Ms. Beasley…but watch it…you’ll fall in love. Still waiting for her forever home.
